On the 29th January 2019 two new EU Regulations came into force. The first one establishes harmonized connecting factors to determine the law applicable to matrimonial regimes as well as jurisdiction to rule on all civil law aspects of such regimes. The second one establishes harmonized connecting factors to determine the law applicable to the property consequences of registered partnerships and to designate the jurisdiction competent to rule on all civil law aspects of such regimes. Both regulations are a welcome addition to the Successions Regulation. It shall be attempted to illustrate how these regulations affect the legal practitioner dealing with cross-border matters.
