This lecture will focus on basic legal concepts relating to child abuse, highlighting the different contexts in which it occurs and the legal response available. It will cover the main components defined as abuse within the law with particular reference to the Civil Code, the Criminal Code, the Domestic Violence Act, the Children and Young Persons (Care Orders) Act and the Protection of Minors (Registration) Act. The session will identify various means of allocation of responsibility for child abuse and possible redress accessible to the child, both during childhood and on attaining majority.
